Social Impact

An impact business refer to a type of employer but also to an approach, whose primary goal of generating profit inherently creates a positive impact on society, a community, or the world. This impact can be economic, social, or environmental. Below is a table classifying impact only and private sector companies under this vertical:

There are several sub-paths that are included under Impact Businesses:

A. Careers in for-profit companies/institutions whose source of financing is private and whose core business is to provide goods and services - this is the case of Social Enterprises and Foundations.

B. Careers in multinational corporations whose core business is not social impact or development, BUT that in their structure they have departments or positions that are related to this sector. For example, you see this reflected in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) jobs or public affairs internships.

Other Things to Consider

TRADE-OFFS:
This sector is full of trade-offs. Just like the Rolling Stones say: "You can't always get what you want..." These are probable scenarios that you may find in front of you:

  • Great Company/Organization + Low position + Good location
  • Less known Company/Organization + Mid- management position + Great location
  • Amazing Company/Organization + Mid-level position + Remote location

It is key for you to leverage your preference in order to make a decision.

ADVICE:

  • Career Paths are never linear. Deviations aren't always bad.
  • Drop prejudgments/preconceptions. Innovation comes from clear minds.
  • The most interesting destinations for ID, IR and SI jobs are usually where help is most needed. Not necessarily the most posh and safe countries.

NEVER FORGET:

  • If you have a target, fill in knowledge gaps
  • Identify your comparative advantage in comparison with others
  • Network: Start with alumni and professors. Intelligence + Connections

PRACTICAL ACTIVITY

Now, it's time for you to be more practical:

  • Follow 10 of your target firms on Linkedin.
  • Speak with at least 3 alumni working in your area of interest. You can also use your personal network of people who work in a consulting firm.
  • Check out the website of your TOP 3 firms to get some insights on how their business works and what the main services are.
