While many of us were on vacation in mid-August, Afghan girls woke up one day to realize their futures had just been obliterated. With the Afghan Taliban's seizure of the capital Kabul, the ability of girls to continue their education, never mind dream of a career, were now in jeopardy. This discussion will explore how Afghan girls found themselves in this predicament and what can we do, even from our national settings, about this tragedy.

Ibrahim Al-Marashi is an Associate Professor of history at California State University San Marcos and visiting professor at the IE University School of Global and Public Affairs in Madrid, Spain. He is co-author of  A Concise History of the Middle East (Routledge, 2018) and teaches a course on the history of women in the Islamic World.
