Marina Maeso - Wednesday, April 8
 Campus Corner

Welcome back to The Campus Corner! Every two weeks, we bring you closer to the people behind your program—not just as your experience team but as locals who love sharing the best of Madrid. We want to build a more personal connection with you and help make Madrid feel like home.

In each edition, you’ll find our favorite spots, from hidden cafes to campus must-visits. Whether you're looking for a brunch spot or just curious about what we love around the city, we hope our picks add something special to your day.

Let’s keep exploring together—enjoy this edition and we'll see you in the next one! Guiño

Meet Dayanara

Coming from the middle of the world – Quito, Ecuador – Dayanara has called Madrid home for the past four years. She first arrived to pursue a Master’s degree in Diplomacy and International Relations, and after experiencing the charm of Spain, she decided to stay.

Dayanara has been always interested in geopolitics, human rights, gender and cooperation. Before joining IE to work with the Master in Finance program, she worked for an international organization providing humanitarian assistance to migrants and refugees. She also spent time volunteering in Brazil, teaching Spanish to children. Outside of work, Dayanara enjoys writing and has published several articles on democracy, multilateralism and EU-Latin America relations. She loves travelling, exploring new places and is always willing to learn.

Some few fun questions for her…

What stories did your family tell you growing up?
My parents and the doctor thought I was going to be a boy! I was supposed to be named “Ayrton” after Formula 1 Champion, Ayrton Senna, who sadly passed away in 1994, a few months before I was born. I admire his career – though ironically, I still haven’t learnt to drive!

What was the last TV show you binge-watched?
I’m one of those people who like to relax with crime documentaries, serial killers’ stories, and psychological thrillers. The last one I watched was: Monster: The Ed Gein Story. It is interesting but quite disturbing – definitely not for everyone!

If you had to wear just one color for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Team blue forever. I think it’s calm, versatile and elegant - and yes, it conveniently matches IE colors (I swear I loved blue before working at IE!) 💙

What do you think makes someone a “good person”?
How you treat others says everything about who you are. Always treat others as you’d like to be treated- no matter their profession, title, or background.

🍴 New Food Hub Alert: Mercado Madriles at Cuatro Caminos

Madrid just unlocked a new culinary playground in Cuatro Caminos, Mercado Madriles Reina Victoria is tucked inside the VP Sognio Metropolitano hotel, ready to take you from breakfast to late-night sipping.

  • Pan.Delirio bakes fresh bread (and yes, their roscón is iconic)

  • Taco Santo brings cochinita pibil and pastor quesadillas

  • Kung Food serves the most delicious fusion baos and gyozas.

  • For something lighter, Healthy Canalla offers clean, tasty options like salmon in herb crust or avocado tartar

  • And, of course, there’s Tapeo Madriles holding it down with bravas, croquetas, and ensaladilla rusa

Two bars anchor the space: Gingko Bar (cañas & wines) and Gingko Cocktail (designer drinks)

Pro tip: You can eat well for under €20 here: tapas, fusion bites, drinks... the kind of place where you can loop dinners into cocktail hour without switching venues.

🍰 Merisù: Madrid’s Tiramisu

Straight out of Rome and now on Calle Santiago, Merisù opened October 4, 2025, and they brought the Tiramishow with them.  They do one thing, and they do it so well: espresso‑style tiramisù, fresh, creamy, and ready in seconds. No long waits, just pure dessert joy.

Open daily from 10:30 a.m. to midnight (yes, midnight) so your sweet tooth has options even after a late class.  If you’re craving balance to your savory city crawl, Merisù is your new go‑to.

If Coffee runs through your veins: UMAMI

Serious about your brew? UMAMI is too. This sleek spot near Paseo del Prado does specialty coffee JUST right: perfect extractions, friendly baristas, and a calm space that’s made for slow sipping. Try the filter if you want to taste what your coffee really feels like.

Recommendation: Their fruit bowls and locally roasted beans are 100% worth the hype. I can't recommend them enough!

🖼️ Pro tip: Take a little time to explore the neighborhood, el Barrio de las Letras is full of quiet charm. The vertical garden at CaixaForum is just around the corner, and El Jardín Botánico is perfect for a promenade worthy of Lady Whistledown’s approval.
Even a short walk through the area feels like a study break well spent.

Matcha Moments 🍵

Are you a matcha lover? On November 6, Sufu Café is hosting its first traditional Japanese tea ceremony with master Uma Nishimura, trained in the elegant and disciplined Higokoryu style of sadō.
Two sessions available: 11:00–12:30 and 13:00–14:30. Spots are very limited, DM Sufu Café to join this serene experience.

🎭 Death Becomes Madrid

Altars & Alebrijes 🌼💀
From Oct 24-Nov 2, Matadero and CentroCentro host two stunning Día de Muertos altars, free to visit, rich in flowers, candles, and memory.
At Hotel Tótem, Mexican designer Daniel Espinosa has created an altar of alebrijes

A Mourning for Humanity 🕷️👻
This year’s most thought-provoking altar? At Fernán Gómez Cultural Center (Oct 27–Nov 16), where the Día de Muertos altar is dedicated to Human Rights and titled Luto por la humanidad.

A Night to Remember 🎶🕯️
On October 30 at 7PM, the Museum of the Americas opens its traditional altar with music, marigolds, and pan de muerto. A festive tribute to memory, community, and the beauty of letting go. All with traditional Mexican music.

Campus Bites 😋 Aloha

Want to keep it healthy after the summer? Aloha is where your poke dreams come true: fresh salmon, creamy avocado, crunchy toppings... It’s light, colorful, and actually satisfying.
Plus, the vibe is chill and the portions are generous 😉
It's a 5-min walk from campus. Check out their menu here.

  • Recommendation: I'm a Pica Tuna kind of person (spicy!), but their wraps are pretty good. You can always make your own and it's hard to go wrong.
  • Menú del día: Wraps from €9.50, salads or poké from €11.50; includes a drink and good vibes. Available Sunday to Thursday, for dine-in or takeaway.

The Jury Experience: Become the Judge!

In this immersive theatre experience at the emblematic Palacio de la Prensa, you’ll step into the shoes of a juror in a gripping criminal case. Testimonies, forensic evidence, emotional confessions... nothing is staged (well, it is... but it won’t feel like it). And when it’s all said and done, you’ll cast the vote that seals someone’s fate.

With powerful performances, The Jury Experience will have you questioning your instincts, your logic, even your definition of justice. This is one of Madrid’s most intense live shows, and you’re the star.

Moviendo el esqueleto

This Thursday, October 30, head to Mercado de San Antón for an "afterwork" that brings the dead to life... in the best way! You will find mariachi bands, tasty drinks, food deals, and a festive crowd that’s VERY much alive.

Grab your friends, raise a glass, and sing your heart out to Cielito Lindo between bites and sips. It's the most joyful farewell to October you'll find.

🕒 19:00–20:30
📍 Mercado de San Antón, C/ Augusto Figueroa 24

🔥 Spice Things Up at Kitchen 154

Born in Mercado de Vallehermoso and now with a second home near Noviciado and a third near La Latina, Kitchen 154 is Madrid’s go-to for unapologetically spicy street food. From Korean wings to smoky curries and tacos with a kick, it’s a flavor adventure that doesn’t hold back.

🌶️ Bonus: great for casual group hangs, solo cravings, or showing visiting friends what Madrid really tastes like.

Slow Days at Mama Pottery

This place is such a gem. You sit down with some snacks, grab a brush, and spend a couple of hours painting your own ceramics. It’s relaxing, creative, and honestly the perfect way to switch off from all the studying.
Highly recommend for a cozy afternoon out... PLUS! You get to take home your masterpiece a few days later... perfect for gifting or just admiring your own artistic genius.

🎨 Sala Alcalá 31: Alfredo Alcain

Step into 60 years of color, wit, and quiet rebellion with Alfredo Alcain. Una retrospectiva — now showing at Sala Alcalá 31 through Jan 11. Over 150 works trace Alcain’s playful, precise take on painting, sculpture, and collage. It’s a deep dive into one Madrid-born artist’s mind as Spain changed around him.

Free entry. Just bold art in a former bank lobby, now a perfect study break.

Escaping Madrid: Ávila🏰✨

Looking for medieval vibes and mountain air? Ávila is just over an hour from Madrid and totally worth the escape.

  • City Walls 🧱: Walk along the best-preserved medieval walls in Spain. Epic views guaranteed.

  • Ávila Cathedral ⛪: Half fortress, half cathedral = 100% impressive.

  • Plaza del Mercado Chico 🏛️: Grab a coffee and soak in the local rhythm.

  • Convent of Saint Teresa 🙏: Visit the birthplace of one of Spain’s most iconic saints.

  • Yemas de Santa Teresa 🍬: Don’t leave without trying these sweet local treats.
