Campus Corner: Flowers, Friends & February in Full Swing πŸŒΈπŸ’˜

Marina Maeso - Wednesday, April 8
 Campus Corner

Welcome back to The Campus Corner! Every two weeks, we bring you closer to the people behind your program—not just as your experience team but as locals who love sharing the best of Madrid. We want to build a more personal connection with you and help make Madrid feel like home.

In each edition, you’ll find our favorite spots, from hidden cafes to campus must-visits. Whether you're looking for a brunch spot or just curious about what we love around the city, we hope our picks add something special to your day.

Let’s keep exploring together—enjoy this edition and we'll see you in the next one! GuiΓ±o

Meet David

Born in Bilbao at the beginning of the 80's, I grew up in a grey city that has been able to transform itself. I am a proud fan of Athletic de Bilbao.
I have lived in 5 different countries: Russia, USA, Poland, Azerbaijan and Spain.

I'm currently working as Senior Associate Director for the MDGM, MRCB and EDTX programs. I have been working at IE Business School for almost 4 years, and I am alumni of the ESMC.

How do you enjoy spending your alone time?
I live close to a park, la Quinta de los Molinos, and I like walking along the almond trees, and laying down in the grass with a book for the longest time possible.

Do you believe in astrology? Why or why not?
I don’t believe in astrology, but I’ve had a blast with friends who do!
I even have my full chart, turns out I’m a Sagittarius with a Cancer moon and Pisces rising (emotional chaos, anyone?). Science may not back it, but it sure makes for great wine-fueled conversations!

What causes are you passionate about?
I am deeply involved in social causes and community-driven initiatives. Over the years, I have had the privilege of working alongside people from very different backgrounds in meaningful and creative ways. I took part in a theatre project with Senegalese immigrants who make their living on the streets, using art as a space for expression and dignity. I have also worked as a translator for Ukrainian refugees, volunteered as an English teacher to Chechen children, and collaborated with the Prado Museum on initiatives aimed at making its collections more accessible to African migrants with low levels of formal education.
Through all these experiences, I have strengthened my belief that there is space for everyone in our societies, and that inclusion, when taken seriously, enriches us all.

What’s the worst job you’ve ever had?
One summer, I worked at the busiest Starbucks on Earth-Leicester Square in London. I spent most days as a cashier, dodging angry tourists and caffeine-deprived zombies. The only highlight? Dramatically asking, “Would you like some cream on top?” like it was a life-or-death decision.

If coffee runs through your veins: La Deseada

This is more than just a modern coffee shop (honestly, these days, it has to be), everything here feels intentional, thoughtfully made, full of flavor.

✨ The secret? All their pastries come straight from their own Obrador, almost around the corner. Baked fresh, and totally worth the detour. πŸ˜‰

It’s the kind of place where you can grab a delicious coffee on your way to class (it's close enough)—or slow down and stay for breakfast.

Recommendation:
Go savory: tortilla de patata or kimchi sandwich, perfect start to a lazy day.
Go sweet: banana-miso bread, chai cookie, and other modern pastry magic.

🌸 Don't miss this πŸŒΏ

If you haven’t been to Quinta de los Molinos, now’s the time. Every February, this park turns into a pink-and-white wonderland as the almond trees burst into bloom— basically Madrid’s own cherry blossom season. 🌷✨

And guess what? It’s totally FREE πŸ’Έ and super easy to get to (Metro Suanzes, L5).

⏳But hurry—this floral magic only lasts a few weeks! Don’t wait until your Insta feed is full of everyone else’s pics. Go now, be the trendsetter πŸ˜‰πŸ“Έ

Sweet Galentine's πŸ’–βœ¨

Friends, frosting, and good energy. This Galentine’s plan is all about coming together to decorate a heart-shaped mini cake in a relaxed, feel-good setting.

You’ll get hands-on with a vintage-style mini cake, sip some wine, snack a little, and enjoy an evening that’s more about laughing and connecting than doing things “perfectly.”
Whether you come with your besties or on your own, you’ll leave with a cake you made yourself and a very sweet memory. Check it out here

🐸 Mercado de las Ranas

On February 21, Calle de las Huertas comes alive with Mercado de las Ranas, a street market where indie shops, local designers, art, fashion, and handmade finds spill out onto the pavement. Come for a casual stroll, stay for the unexpected treasures, live music, and that unbeatable “I wasn’t planning to buy anything but…” feeling.
If you miss this one, don’t worry, it happens every month, twice a month πŸ›οΈβœ¨

Carnaval Takes Over Madrid 🎭

From February 14–18, it's Carnaval! Madrid swaps routine for wigs, masks, and pure theatrical chaos. Expect street parades and pop-up performances around Matadero Madrid and Madrid Río, where the city’s Carnaval energy really comes alive.

🐟 El Entierro de la Sardina (Feb 18)
The grand finale unfolds between Rastro, Lavapiés, and Casa de Campo, as a giant sardine is paraded, mourned dramatically, and ceremoniously “buried.” It’s ironic, absurd, and wonderfully Madrid—don’t overthink it, just follow the crowd and enjoy the drama. 🎭✨

πŸ’Œ Love Letters & Wagging Tails

This one’s for the dog lover: brunch, a heartfelt letter, and your favorite four-legged muse by your side... because, yes, your pup is invited.
You’ll enjoy brunch while your perrito gets their own, sit down to write a love letter straight from the heart, and have a professional photographer quietly capture the moment.
Warning: high chance of happy tears.

Feb 14th, 11am, more details here

Valentine's, Friends & No Awkward Plans πŸ’˜πŸŽ‰

1. Self-Love, Main Character Energy πŸ’…
Start Valentine’s the right way: treat yourself. A long walk, your favorite coffee, a little shopping detour, maybe dessert just because. Romantic? Not exactly. Satisfying? Extremely. You are the plan.

2. Rom-Com & Mocktails Night 🎬🍹
Catch a vintage film at Cine Doré (tickets are free!) or the dreamy Sala Equis, then head to 1862 Dry Bar for elegant cocktails with a twist. Cheers to friendship, candlelight, and cinematic feelings!

3. Prado Power Hour πŸ–ΌοΈ
Wander the Prado (free entrance with your student card if you're under 25) with your besties and invent dramatic love stories about the art. End the afternoon with merienda at Café Murillo (churros strongly encouraged)

4. Hearts & High Notes 🎀
Sing your heart out at BAM Karaoke Box near Plaza de España or Quevedo. Private booths, themed drinks, and zero judgment. Only pure joy and your favorite love songs on repeat.

β˜• Coffee Fest Takes Over Madrid

If you love coffee, this one’s a must. From February 14–16, Coffee Fest brings cafés from across Madrid and roasters from around the world together in one caffeine-filled space. Once you’ve got your ticket, tastings are unlimited, so come curious (and hydrated).

You'll also find pastries, great matcha, rich cacao bars, and a few fun surprises (like ice cream and pottery) with plenty of non-dairy milk options to go around.

Across the weekend, the agenda is packed with cuppings, tastings, latte art competitions, and expert-led talks, but you don’t need a plan to enjoy it. Drop into a session, watch a competition, learn something new, then move on to your next cup. It is designed for both curious beginners and serious coffee lovers alike. βš‘β˜•βœ¨

β˜• Madrid Oat Week Is Brewing

In addition to the Coffee Fest, there's also Madrid's Oat Week! Pop-up drinks, latte art, matcha moments, workshops, social runs, film nights, and very creative oat-powered drinks across some of the city’s best cafés 🌾✨
Most activities are free (yes, really), some need sign-up — all are an excuse to café-hop. Here are our faves:

  • The Sunday Oat Run: Feb 15 10:30, no sign up πŸ“ OSOM Gen.O 2
Run + free coffee for the first 50 runners.
  • Chocoatly with Churros: Feb 12, no sign up πŸ“ POTE Café-Bar
  • Social Ride: Feb 14. Social bike ride + coffee stop + brunch, only 6.99€!

Your picks, your city: πŸ”₯ Host Coffee & Wine

This week’s top student recommendation is in!
“It’s the best place to eat some homemade food or have an amazing coffee.”
And honestly? No notes, we love it, too. Come hungry, stay caffeinated, maybe add a glass of wine if the day calls for it. 🍷✨

Still with us? Good.
Quick update: we had to hit pause on that little surprise we hinted at (plot twists happen).
The good news? Something bigger is in the works... and it’ll be worth the wait.
Moral of the story: always read until the end. That’s where the good stuff lives. 🧩
