Global Standards and Feminism

Two days ago, we had the incredible opportunity to collaborate with the Women in Business Club and organize an insightful and engaging conversation with special guests: Patricia Gabaldon and Ibrahim Al-Marashi. We debated on what feminism and empowerment meant on a global level.

We started off with the intricate socio-cultural implications of feminism in the world of beauty pageants and wars, how according to Ibrahim Al-Marashi “feminism has become a system of reality to combat contemporaneity”. Patricia Gabaldon also enlightened us to the economic rationale of feminism in different countries, discussing quotas and relating them to “an unfair solution to an unfair situation.” She referred to how feminism relates to empowerment and agency in our current world, according to her, “it's not about the fight, it's about being able to defend your choices.”

Overall, the event proved to be an eye-opener to many branching topics under feminism, so thank you again to our amazing guest speakers, to the Women in Business Club who collaborated with us to bring this together and to our participants who attended!

Omar Alshogre: A Voice for the Voiceless

Omar Alshogre faced a life of imprisonment and torture as a teenager in Syria. But since his escape from detention, Omar has used his personal story to educate and advocate for human rights. Currently, alongside his role as the Director for Detainee Affairs at the Syrian Emergency Task Force, he remains an inspiring and active public speaker, bringing awareness to rights violations. He has brought his story around the world, in venues from TEDx talks to speeches given in the US Congress. On February 11th, IE University is honoured to have the opportunity to host Omar to share his experiences in Syria and discuss his subsequent career as an activist, acting as a “voice for the voiceless.” Register here.

The Syrian Revolution started in 2011 as part of the Arab Spring, a series of anti-government protests, uprisings, and armed rebellions that spread across much of the Arab world in the early 2010s. It began in response to oppressive regimes and a low standard of living, starting with protests in Tunisia. Syrian was soon to follow.

Since the revolution began, the Syrian regime was accused of many human rights violations including violence against demonstrators, many were killed or arrested. Small groups of armed rebels started to appear immediately and since then government and rebels are at war against each other. The civilians are between the two groups and are mistreated by both which leads them to wonder whether the revolution is really worth it.

IEUMUN 2021: Secretariat & Staff Applications

Do you want to organise the second edition of IE University Model United Nations?

IE University Model United Nations (IEUMUN) is a simulation of the diplomatic process which takes place in the United Nations Committees. Participants represent the position of a particular country and try to reach a Resolution on a pressing issue. In collaboration with the School of Global and Public Affairs and in light of its new partnership with the United Nations, the IE Debate Club will be hosting the second edition of IEUMUN in the next academic year (2021-2022).

We are looking for a team of committed and open-minded students that will lead the organization of a potential in-person conference with more committees and more delegates participating from all over the world.

Secretariat and Staff applications will be open until the 12th of February midnight. Applications will be filtered for a second interview phase taking place the week of the 15th of February. Click here to apply (you will be able to select the particular position you would like to apply for within the form).
