Human Resources

What is Human Resources?

The term HR (Human Resources) refers to the function within an organization responsible for managing all aspects related to people, including talent attraction, development, compensation, employee experience and organizational culture.

Over the past decades, HR has evolved significantly — from a predominantly administrative function to a strategic driver of business performance, organizational sustainability and transformation. Today, HR plays a critical role in enabling companies to achieve their objectives by aligning people strategy with business goals.

In most multinational organizations, the HR Director or Chief People Officer is a member of the Executive Committee and actively contributes to shaping business strategy, alongside other key functions such as Finance or Marketing.

The global human resource professional services market was valued at USD 6.39 billion in 2024 and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 13.4% from 2025 to 2030. This growth is driven by increasing workforce complexity, digital transformation, and the adoption of technologies such as artificial intelligence and data analytics (Source).

One of the strengths of the HR profession is the combination of different perspectives and backgrounds. While some professionals bring expertise in psychology, behavior, and people development, others contribute business, legal, analytical, technological, or operational perspectives. This diversity of profiles enriches the function and reflects the multidisciplinary nature of modern Human Resources.

Main Roles in HR

Human Resources professionals typically operate in three main areas:

  • In-house/Corporate HR: HR Department of a company, in any kind of industry.
  • Staffing and recruitment consulting: Staffing agencies, recruiting firms, or personnel consulting firms that aid other companies in finding qualified employees, both on a permanent and temporary basis. In these cases, the companies' core business is specifically focused on HR-related topics.
  • HR consulting: Consulting firms that offer Human Resources services to other companies, such as Talent and Culture Organization, Digital Transformation, People Analytics, Leadership Development, Learning Programs, Diversity & Inclusion, etc.

Where to Apply

There are multiple channels to access opportunities in HR, including internships, graduate programs and entry-level roles.

Key resources you can use

  • Join our Careers Forums and participate in Recruiting Events organized by the companies, either online or on campus. Check always the Newsletter from Talent & Careers, so you won't miss any of them!
  • Company websites — Don't forget to always check directly the Companies' websites you are most interested in! It is good to check on several job search platforms (like LinkedIn, Glassdoor, JobTeaser, etc.) but the most effective way to be considered in a selection process is by applying directly through the Company website, as you will be directly included in their Applicant Tracking Systems.
