Space is no longer a distant frontier, it is critical infrastructure underpinning Europe’s security, economic growth and everyday life. From Earth observation and satellite services to emerging commercial activities and exploration, space capabilities are increasingly central to Europe’s strategic autonomy and global competitiveness.

Bringing together leading voices from European institutions, the space sector and the technology industry, this panel will examine how Europe can strengthen its position in a rapidly evolving space landscape. Enrico Letta, Dean of IE School of Politics, Economics & Global Affairs, will deliver the welcome remarks, followed by a discussion featuring Pedro Duque, President of Hispasat and astronaut; Juan Carlos Cortés, Director of the Spanish Space Agency an President of the ESA Council; Simonetta Cheli, Director of Earth Observation Programmes and Head of ESA-ESRIN; and Lucy Cronin, Vice President, Amazon EU Public Policy.

Moderated by Elena Grifoni Winters, Academic Director of Space Initiatives at IE University, the conversation will explore the role of public institutions and private companies in fostering innovation, resilience and strategic autonomy, while ensuring that Europe remains secure, competitive and at the forefront of the global space economy.

The event will also inaugurate the Space Sector Unlocked executive programme, taking place from October 20–23, 2026, in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA).

The event is co-orgzanized with the IE Aerospace Club.
