Sustainability has great challenges ahead in this new post-COVID-19 scenario and a commitment to improve our societies by orienting this change towards social and environmental justice. Confinement has stopped consumption, but not environmental pollution.

Despite the slowdown in the world economy, climate change continues to advance. This crisis has highlighted the inadequacy of the global response to climate and biodiversity emergencies: despite a commitment to keep the global temperature rise to 1.5°C, the world is still on a dangerous 3°C path.

The COVID-19 pandemic could mean decades of delay in sustainable development. "The Pandemic does not create development", and without development, there is no sustainability.

In this context, we wanted to analyse the importance of Art and the Newspaper. The former, as a means of communication, an expression of current events on a support that can be recycled, and because of its power to represent and transmit the truth. The second, as a channel for the transmission of sensations and a tool for changing our view of the world.

The IE Creativity Center has prepared a couple of actions in its aim to align itself with IE University's Sustainability Week. An exhibition by the Guatemalan artist Alexander Zuleta thanks to our collaboration with El Núcleo Fundación SZ, and a masterclass with the artist himself.

The masterclass aims to create a part of the work in the exhibition, a legacy created by students who will enter into a direct dialogue with the artist's work. This is why we are opening the participation of IE Community because of its crucial impact on the legacy we can leave to future generations.

Would you like to participate?

The following is a summary of Alexander Zuleta's Master Class on the 19th of November at 16:00.

The idea is that the students and the artist create a work together. We will have collected newspaper clippings of environmental news. The artist will provide each of them with a folder with other materials on which to intervene the newsprint.

Guided by Zuleta, everyone will create a joint work that can be placed in the centre of the IE Creativity Center room.
