Ruben Pater is a designer at a moment in time when more design is about the last thing the world needs. In search of ethical alternatives, he designs, writes, and teaches. After receiving his bachelor's degree in graphic design, Ruben Pater worked as a designer for different studios in the Netherlands. This experience led him to pursue a master's degree at the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam, which he completed in 2012. His practice combines journalism, activism, and graphic design under the name Untold Stories. He is the author of two books on visual communication and design: The Politics of Design (BIS, 2016) and CAPS LOCK (Valiz, 2021).

COMMON(S) takes as its starting point what is held in common: space, resources, systems, futures. Architecture, design andfashion have long celebrated the singular author and the exceptional object. This series asks what happens when we shift the frametoward the collective, the ordinary, and the mutual. How do our disciplines operate within shared social, ecological, digital andpolitical systems? And what does it mean to design not for, but with? COMMON(S) opens a space to think about collective agencyand shared futures.
