The Collaborative Research Seminar Series (CRSS) at IE University is designed to showcase the ongoing and prospective research of our faculty members. By arranging the seminars around specific themes, we seek to uncover shared interests across the various schools at the university. The CRSS serves as a platform for faculty to discuss their current and future projects and provide opportunities for collaboration. We hope the CRSS will inspire and encourage other faculty members to share their research interests with the broader school and academic community.

TOPIC: On the origins of the Jacobean cult

DESCRIPTION: All that can be said about the causes that motivated the emergence of the cult of the apostle James is a matter of hypothesis. After years of teaching and research on this subject and analyzing written and archaeological sources, Dr Larrañaga proposes the existence of two phases that explain this phenomenon. It is a journey between the 1st and 9th centuries of the Christian era and through different historical circumstances that takes us from the martyrdom of the apostle in Jerusalem to the discovery or "inventio" of his tomb in Galicia and the beginning of the pilgrimages.

SPEAKERS: Miguel Larrañaga, Director of the IE Antiquity & Middle Ages Research Center
