Arts & Humanities Week: A Celebration of Human Experience aims to highlight how the Arts & Humanities infuse meaning & vibrance into our daily lives, especially within our IE community.
No matter what your area of interest, there´s an activity for you during the week of February 14-18th!
We have activities planned on all 3 campuses: IE Tower, María de Molina & Segovia as well as hybrid options to attend.

Join the inauguration of an exhibition of winning IE photography in the corridors of the Maria de Molina Campus. Victoria Gimeno of the IE Foundation Prizes in the Humanities will present the Prizes in the Humanities project.
Enjoy some food and drinks during the inauguration and check out the new photography across the María de Molina campus!

Like the pioneers of the art of photography, the artist Juan Ferrete has put on the suit of a chemist, alchemist and craftsman to materialize 'Between lights and shadows (Entre luces y sombras)', on exhibition at La Alhóndiga in Segovia.
This industrial engineer and high school teacher from the province of Alicante explores the photographic techniques of the 19th century, so that the 56 works he shows in Segovia he has made without cameras and instead with handcrafted prints.
The artist himself, Juan Ferrete, will guide us through his works in this exhibition and his ¨slow photography¨ processes.

As a part of IE Arts & Humanities Week, join us for a screening of the opera La Traviata (Giuseppe Verdi) from the Vienna State Opera.
The event will begin at 17:00 with an introduction by Manuel Muñiz, Provost of IE University.
Then, Bogdan Roščić, Director of the Vienna State Opera will join us virtually for a conversation with Catalina Tejero, Associate Head of the IE Arts & Humanities Division.
Following this conversation, we will begin the screening of La Traviata, directly in the IE Tower Auditorium!

Professor Miguel Larrañaga will lead the first of the Humanities in Conversation series of 2022.
Lessons in Stoicism: What ancient philosophers teach us about how to live.
An open debate on a book by John Sellars.
Professor Larrañaga will guide the conversation:
• Introduce the author, the book and its structure
• Next, offer a brief definition of Stoicism
• Then, open a debate on the main ideas of the book, through the original texts of Seneca, Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius used by Sellars
• Finally, reflect on the current validity of these classic authors and the usefulness of this type of philosophical literature written by contemporary authors

In this workshop, writer Jorge F. Hernandez will speak on his most recently published novel, El bosque flotante (The Floating Forest), a work of fiction that is based on his own life experiences. Hernandez will then lead students in a hands-on workshop where they will begin to create their own work of ¨autofiction.¨
Biography:
Jorge F. Hernandez (Mexico City, 1962)
Hernández lived the first years of his life in Cologne, Germany, and from two to fourteen years old in Washington, D.C. He is a historian and his undergraduate thesis, La soledad del silencio. Microhistoria del Santuario de Atotonilco, was published in 1991, having won the National Prize for Regional History with Honorable Mention. La emperatriz de Lavapiés, his first novel, was published in Alfaguara in 1997, and in 2000 won the Efrén National Short Story Award Hernández for his story ¨Noche de ronda.¨ He is the author of five storybooks, two volumes of short stories and six books of essay and chronicle. He has been a collaborator in various media such as the magazines Vuelta by Octavio Paz and Cambio by Gabriel Garcia Márquez, as well as a columnist for the newspaper El Pais (Spain) and Milenio (Mexico).

Discover how a play develops from the written page to the stage. ¨From the Page to the Stage¨ is a 4 part workshop series will take you through the creative process and the artistic team involved step by step.
Please check the schedule below and ensure that you are able to attend all sessions prior to registration.
This workshop provides an introduction to the play El Método Grönholm by the director, Tamzin Townsend.
The workshop will including the following themes:
-Overview and Directorial vision.
-Class reading of the play with discussion on themes and character analysis.
-Artistic decisions to be made when getting a play up and running. Including Casting, Set Design, Lighting, Music, Costume.
-The team. Producer, designer & actors
-Go to the play (March 17), experience the show, set and production at the Alcazar Theatre in Madrid.

Join us for the opening event of Arts & Humanities Week!
With an introduction by Manuel Muñiz - Provost, Catalina Tejero - Associate Head of the Arts & Humanities Division, and Gonzalo Garland - Executive Vice President of the IE Foundation. Maribel Lopez, Director of ARCO, will also be joining us to introduce the week and speak on the importance of the arts.
Followed by a round-table discussion led by the IE Arts & Business Club on art as an investment & young collectionism with Pia Rubio (Art Advisor) and Inés Sagardoy (Founder of the Young Investors Club of Madrid).
IE Campus Life will then present the new IExhibition Gallery Space by the IE Arts Club following the round-table. We will enjoy a cocktail while admiring the artwork & listening to IE Jazz Band play in the -4 Launchpad. See you there!
