The humanities vs. STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) -  a centuries old debate on which is superior to the other is becoming even more heated today – in academia, in the corporate world, and even in friendly discussions. 

Is it possible to marry the two - STEM and Humanities? Should we prioritize an education in STEM over one in Humanities? Are the new degrees, such as Human-Centered Computing and Digital Humanities the futhre?

Sowmya Vavilala is an International MBA student from India and an aspiring change maker with the aim to empower farmers through her own Agribusiness. An computer science engineer by degree she found her passion in agriculture while working with rural communities in India. Later, she worked on government funded projects assessing business models of farmer companies and suggesting policy changes to the government to empower farmers. Along with aspiring to be a change maker, Sowmya is also a swimmer and a debater. Federica Ilaria Fornaciari is an Italian-American professional, former Bain consultant and alumni of IE Business School (International Master in Business Administration ’13). Grew in USA as a child she moved in Italy where she achieved a Bachelor Degree in Business Administration at Luiss Business School in Roma (where she collaborated with various international project related to digital transformation such as RAI) and a Master in Marketing at Bocconi University. In Madrid she founded her second professional and personal home once she achieved her MBA at IE Business School (’13) Her professional career was always related to digital, in a first moment as a consultant in Value Lab (Ambrosetti-McKinsey spin off) - working into companies such as Yoox Net a Porter – and in Bain (with a strong focus in fashion and luxury industry), then moving into the marketing and communication industry joining WPP Italy (Digital Director of MediaCom and CDO of VMLY&R). Recognized as an expert of the field of digital marketing and transformation she was involved as presenter and speaker in the main Italian digital events. Given this expertise she joined also the academic field as Adjunt Professor in Liuc of Digital and Mobile Marketing, Fellow in Bocconi SDA (especially of programmatic topic and digital marketing for executives) and speaker/ lecturer in other institutions such as Bologna Business School, Izmir University (Turkey) etc. After the experience in WPP, Federica has now joined Havas Media Group in Spain (the biggest communication group of the country) as Digital Strategy Director.

Rolf Strom-Olsen earned his BA from the University of Pennsylvania, his MA from McGill University and his PhD from Northwestern University, all in history. A former Fulbright scholar, he has been teaching at IE since 2009 and is the architect of the humanities curriculum in the IMBA program.
