16 Days of Activism: International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

What do we mean when we talk about sex, gender and sexual orientation? How are gender norms created, and why do they vary across cultures and historical periods?

This introductory session will distinguish between sex characteristics, sex assigned at birth, gender identity, gender expression and sexual and romantic attraction. It will also introduce intersex variations and explore how different societies have understood gender beyond a strictly binary model.

The session will consider gender as a social, cultural and historical construction and examine how colonialism attempted to suppress gender identities and social roles that did not conform to European norms.

Through visual tools, short polls and practical examples, participants will develop a clearer and more inclusive understanding of gender diversity.

Participants will:

● Distinguish between sex characteristics, sex assigned at birth, gender identity, gender expression and sexual orientation.

● Understand what intersex means and how it differs from gender identity.

● Explore how gender norms are socially and culturally constructed.

● Learn about societies that have recognised gender identities or roles beyond a strict binary.

● Identify practical ways to contribute to more inclusive university spaces.
