Acclaimed novelist Jessica Andrews joins Cristina Ward, Head of Arts at British Council Spain, for an in-depth discussion of her work, exploring the powerful themes that run through her writing. Andrews’ debut Saltwater, winner of the Portico Prize, and her second novel Milk Teeth, shortlisted for the Royal Society of Literature Encore Award, both examine the intersections of identity, social class, gender and the body with striking sensitivity and precision.
In this wide-ranging conversation, Andrews will reflect on how these cross-cutting concerns shape her fiction, as well as tracing her journey to becoming a writer. From early influences to her emergence as one of the most distinctive voices of her generation, the discussion will offer insight into her creative process and the evolving concerns of her work.

Cristina Ward has been Head of Arts of the British Council in Spain since January 2023. Her professional career in the area of arts management in Spain spans more than thirty years, dating from her move from the UK to Madrid in the late 1980s. She has worked for a variety of private and public cultural institutions including the agency that organised the Madrid, European Capital of Culture 1992 programme, the National Youth Orchestra of Spain, the Spanish Society of Authors, Composers and Publishers (SGAE) and the Spanish Association of Symphony Orchestras. She has also worked as a free-lance production manager running opera and theatre productions and festivals in Spain, China and Mexico.

Jessica Andrews is a novelist. Her work explores intersections of social class and gender in relation to the body. Her debut novel, Saltwater won the Portico Prize in 2020 and her second novel, Milk Teeth was shortlisted for the Royal Society of Literature Encore Award in 2023. Her work is translated into seven languages. Her stage adaptation of BIFA winning and BAFTA nominated film Saint Maud by Rose Glass ran at Live Theatre in 2024.
