The acclaimed writer and filmmaker Rodrigo Cortés has just published ‘Hija del cielo’ (Daughter of Heaven) (Literatura Random House), a dazzling novel featuring a girl who may be possessed, since the Handsome Man dwells within her. In conversation with journalist Jesús García Calero, they will discuss the origin of the book’s two voices — that of the narrator, and the girl’s dislocated, wild, tumultuous tongue, capable of recounting horror with an almost comic naturalness. The blend of tradition and popular culture that come together in the ever-unsettling beauty language grants us. And the mystical literature and sacred-terror wit with which Cortés establishes himself, with this book, as one of the freest and most genuine writers on the current Spanish scene. The author of ‘Los años extraordinarios’ (The Extraordinary Years) and ‘Cuentos telúricos’ (Telluric Tales) this time brings to life Gabaón, the village where the girl lives locked in a room, rising on a cliff facing the sea, functioning as school, orphanage, and monastery, home to sixty-one busy, purposeful nuns, along with three indolent priests led by the gaunt Father Alén, with his voice like a cheese grater.

Jesús García Calero is a journalist and the editor-in-chief of the Spanish newspaper ABC Cultural. His areas of expertise include reporting on cultural heritage and cultural policy, as well as public outreach. He is the author of Don Juan contra Franco (2018), an investigative work focused on Francoist intelligence reports targeting monarchists in 1948; Geografía del deseo (2025), a collection of erotic short stories; and Alcalá de Henares. Historia entre ficciones (2024), a literary journey through the history of Cervantes’s birthplace. He has also published the poetry collection Lecciones de tiniebla. He is a leading Spanish-language journalist on underwater archaeology, known for his investigations into the “Odyssey Case” and the San José galleon. He has been a distinguished guest on several archaeological missions in Spain and France and has published essays on this subject, including: Instructions for Finding Treasure (*Antropología*, INAH bulletin, Mexico) and The Impact of Mass Media on the Discrimination of Hispanic Sunken Heritage and the Implementation of the 2001 UNESCO Convention (APCONF, Honolulu).
