Why does political violence seem to be on the rise across the world — from mass protests and uprisings to the erosion of democratic norms? Inequality can be identified as one of the key forces driving frustration, polarization, and revolt. Global political violence has reached alarming new heights, with 2024 ACLED data showing a 25% increase in incidents recorded over the past year.

Join us for an engaging student-led roundtable discussion guided by Professor Oscar Martinez Tapia, Professor of Political Science, as we explore how rising inequality acts as a catalyst for political violence. Together, we’ll unpack the political consequences of widening social divides and reflect on what can be done to build more equitable societies and address the growing tide of political unrest.

This will be an interactive conversation rather than a lecture — participants are encouraged to come prepared to share their perspectives and contribute thoughtfully to the discussion.
