Theatre Club: Meisner Technique: The Repetition Game

The Meisner Technique is an approach developed by the American Sanford Meisner for the actor to “get out of their head”. The Repetition Game is an exercise taught by him that emphasizes spontaneity and greater listening between actors. It also helps to shift the actor’s attention away from their own self-consciousness and onto the other actor in the exercise.

There are three rules for repetition:

1. Tell the truth
2. If in doubt repeat
3. Don’t stop playing the game until you are told to stop. Keep playing if you get it right, if you get it wrong, if you completely screw it up or even if a herd of gazelles’ tramples over the rest of the participants
