B Academics Spain Research Workshop

The objective of this workshop is on the one hand, to facilitate research in the field of the role of business in a sustainable economy, to reflect the increasing plurality and vitality of studies in this area; on the other hand, to stimulate broadly cross-disciplinary studies bridging the role of business and its impact on society.

The role of business in the transition to a sustainable economy is paramount and business leaders around the globe are increasingly embracing it. Purpose-driven companies, among them Certified B Corporations and Benefit Corporations (B Corps), have become a global phenomenon, 15 years in the making, gaining more attention both in Spain and globally. These companies are differentiated by their strong mission to create positive change in their community, contributing to sustainable development and social justice. If we look only at those that are certified B Corps, we find that currently there are around 3,500 certified companies, dispersed among 70 different countries, and the actual numbers of purpose-driven companies go way beyond those certified as B Corps.

Research on purpose-driven business (Social ventures, sustainable business, B Corps,…) has grown exponentially in a varied range of disciplines such as accounting, economics, entrepreneurship, ethics, finance, law, marketing, sociology, and political science.
A network of educators and researchers from around the world - B-Academics - are committed to accelerating the sustainable business movement by studying the global movement of purpose-driven businesses, B Corporations and benefit corporations more broadly. B Academics Spain is particularly interested in accelerating and promoting research on this topic in Spain and beyond, contributing to leverage the sustainable business movement in a broader geographical scope.
