What are we up to?

  • Academics

We have been hard at work in ensuring that the responsibilities of a class representative are more clearly defined, and that class representatives are held accountable for their roles.

This involves the pursuing following initiatives:

    • Updating the class representative guidelines to be more detailed and include a class representative positive affirmation. We are setting up an onboarding process at the beginning of the year to ensure that class representatives have all the tools they need to fulfil their role’s requirements.

    • Requesting the 1 credit that class representatives get counted for dual degrees by offering them 1 credit worth of scholarship.
    • Setting aside space in our SG budget to bring class representatives together for a social coffee once a semester.
    • We are pushing against the university's decision to unilaterally increase mandatory attendance to 80%, without the necessary improvements in procedure and infrastructure. See our 'Reports' section for more information on this.
  • Community Development

We've spent significant amounts of time reimagining the traditional Freshers' Week to be as welcoming and inclusive as possible. As such, we present to you, Freshers' Welcome.

    • We've prepared a schedule for a number of events in the month of September to help students integrate into their new community, through different kinds of ice-breaking activities in partnership with student clubs and locations.
    • Based on the feedback received, we have set aside space for events catered to 2nd year & above students as a welcome back after the holidays! You can find information related to these events in the Events Section!
    • Since the IE community is filled with dedicated student entrepreneurs, we have also put together a schedule of nightlife events (Madrid & Segovia) across two campuses based on the promotional requests by current students.

We have many more exciting events planned for the rest of the year, so keep an eye out here for more information!

  • President's Committee

Beyond ensuring deadlines over the summer were met across the entire SG team, our committee has been focused on three initiatives.

    1. We prepared an in-depth reflection on the structure and procedures for the Academic Ethics Committee, outlining what parts needed revising, restructuring, or complete reevaluation. In addition, the committee is exploring opportunities for a new initiative to benefit IE with its partner universities and the long term view for future student government teams at IE. We are excited to bring this idea to you soon!

    3. Lastly, we are coordinating a strategy across and within the many departments the university has, building collaborations with all sorts ranging from the Entrepreneurship & Innovation Center to the Women & Allies office!
  • Communications

This summer, we have taken on a challenge never before successfully maintained by a Student Government: a website to remain fully functional throughout the year, to be a one-stop-shop for all undergraduate students’ needs and desires.

This website primarily caters to first year students’ welcome information for now, but is being expanded to include regular updates from our committees, a growing ledger of university information, a section to highlight student-engagement opportunities from within our community, and more.

Moreover, we have structured how we want to make our Student Government officers more accessible to the student body as individual representatives, along with how to communicate the team’s purposes and endeavors better.

Curious as to what channels we have? Keep an eye out for our regular reels on @ieustudentgovt, @ IE this Week Whats App Chat, Athletics Center Chat, and your inbox!

  • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion,

We are incredibly excited about the formation of this new committee!

By updating the SG By Laws, we are hoping to cement its purview as a mandatory one for the years to come, as a key form of advocacy for our student body’s needs.

We have been working on including a mandatory structure for all first years to ensure the necessary conversations are being held from the very get-go, and are seeking opportunities to cement constructive and concrete/sincere conversations in our community henceforth.

Based on two small, initial focus groups held in the previous academic year, we prepared a report that was presented to various actors within the community.
