Leading Class Discussions: A Case Teaching Workshop Introduction

The purpose of this seminar is to offer IE faculty the opportunity of learning about best practices in participant centered teaching methods. A practical oriented seminar, it´s aim is to develop additional skills for leading discussions in your courses. The discussion method is generally well received by the students, who consider it a more engaging experience than the traditional lecture. It requires more proactive work of the students, who develop criteria rather than memory. It is in line with the trends for education in Europe and it focuses on the learning of the students rather than teaching of professors. We will be using class discussions in the seminar about class discussions. We will particularly discuss cases about some real experiences of professors in class.

AI in Your Teaching Journey: Practical Activities & Tools

This interactive workshop will guide participants in defining practical personal AI use cases, starting with a brief theoretical overview and progressing to hands-on examples and tools. The goal is not just to address current challenges, but to help each attending professor define their own optimal use cases as we keep up with the rapid advancements in AI technology. Specific examples will be shared to serve as a model, but the primary aim is for each attending professor to start thinking about their own use cases and engage in collaborative discussions on implementation.

The foundation of the session will be to define the processes in relation areas as diverse as:

1. Course definition
2. Student onboarding and/or assistance
3. Preparation of materials
4. Classroom engagement assistance
5. Grading assistance The goal is to create a process map, define where AI can assist, and implement it.

To achieve this, different processes will be demonstrated, and attendees will be encouraged to develop their own processes and ideate solutions.

Competencies in the AI Era: Critical Thinking

How can we better engage students in critical thinking about the societal, cultural, ethical, and legal implications of generative AI (GenAI)? This workshop aims to help professors design an in-class activity in which students will be asked to accomplish a task using GenAI tools, then reflect on the potential implications of using these tools. We will begin with an overview of some of the key questions that have been
raised about GenAI: its potential impacts on jobs, the environment, labor relations, intellectual property rights, cultural production, and the nature of how we understand “reality,” among others. Following this overview, the workshop facilitator will share an example of an activity designed for Communication students that led to a productive in-class discussion of GenAI’s implications for that field. Finally, workshop participants will work on designing a similar activity for a course they teach and share their ideas. Participants will leave the workshop with a view on how to approach Critical Thinking competencies in their teaching and a plan for an engaging activity that prompts students to reflect on and discuss the broader consequences of GenAI for their chosen field of study.
