Industry

Sectors and Sub-Sectors of the Industrial World

The industrial world is very broad, but we can identify and subdivide it into 5 main areas, each one of them with different sub-sectors:

  1. Energy
  2. Transport
  3. Aerospace
  4. Manufacturing & Industrial Products
  5. Commodity Trading

Generally speaking, within this macro sector we can include all the B2B companies that are producing a specific product.

The opportunities to work in industrial companies are vast, as inside them there are different departments and specialties you can choose.

Let's dig more into it!

1. ENERGY

The Energy Sector is very extensive and includes a complex and inter- related network of companies directly and indirectly involved in the production, distribution and supply of energy.

Companies in this field can be classified in two main categories, based on how the energy is sourced:

NON-RENEWABLE COMPANIES

  • Petroleum and oil products
  • Natural gas
  • Gasoline
  • Diesel fuel
  • Heating oil
  • Nuclear

RENEWABLE COMPANIES

  • Hydropower
  • Biofuels such as Ethanol
  • Wind power
  • Solar power

As a third category inside this sector we can include also another one, named Utilities, which includes all the companies that provide basic amenities such as water, sewage services, electricity, dams, and natural gas.

Robust opportunities are expected in all branches of the energy industry, as new technology improves alternative energy options and makes traditional options easier and cleaner to produce. These developments will feed demand for workers with the skills and ability to remain on the industry forefront.

Especially Clean Energy has gained more and more attention over the last few years and many investors believe that it will play an important role in the future, especially with the growing demand for Electric Cars.

2. TRANSPORT

The Transportation Sector includes companies that provide services to move people or goods, as well as transportation infrastructure:

  • Automotive
  • Airlines
  • Logistics and transportation infrastructure
    • Marine transportation
    • Rail transportation
    • Air transportation
    • Road transportation

The Automotive Industry constitutes one of the most important market sectors. It is one of the largest in terms of revenue with mass production and mass consumption, becoming a vital element in the economy of the industrialized countries (motor vehicle production and sales are one of the major indexes of the state of the economy in those countries).

Digitization, increasing automation, and new business models have revolutionized our worlds, including the automotive industry. These forces are giving rise to four disruptive technology-driven trends in the automotive sector:

  • Diverse Mobility
  • Autonomous Driving
  • Electrification
  • Connectivity

3. AEROSPACE

The Aerospace Industry is related to the research, development and manufacturing of flight vehicles, including among others aircrafts, missiles, rockets and spacecrafts, but also uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) or unpower gliders and sailplanes, for example.

We include in this sector also the companies involved in the development of flight-vehicle subsystems such as propulsion and avionics (avation electronics), as well as support systems for testing, operation and maintenance of the flight vehicles.

One major group of ground-based support products comprises simulation devices—systems used for training aircraft and spacecraft crews and for research-and-development processes.

The aerospace industry is characterized by a relatively small number of large firms and numerous international partnerships at every level. In terms of sales, military aircraft have the largest market share, followed by space systems and civil aircraft.

The industry’s customers range from private individuals to large corporations and commercial airlines, telecommunications companies, and government agencies.

4. MANUFACTURING & CHEMICALS PRODUCTS

With the term Manufacturing, we refer to a very wide range of Companies involved in the fabrication, processing or transformation of materials from commodities, substances or components into finished products that can be sold in the marketplace (mainly as B2B commerce).

Manufacturing plays a huge role in modern society, as everything from knitting textiles to oil extraction to steel production falls within this sector of business.

Among the main categories we find:

  • Chemical
  • Electronic and Electrical Equipment
  • Fabricated Metal
  • Food Manufacturing
  • Furniture and Fixtures
  • Industrial and Commercial Machinery
  • Leather
  • Lumber and Wood
  • Measuring, Analyzing and Controlling Instrument
  • Paper
  • Primary Metal
  • Rubber and Miscellaneous Plastic
  • Stone, Clay, Glass, and Concrete
  • Textile (B2B)
  • Tobacco
  • Transportation Equipment
  • Miscellaneous Manufacturing

Manufacturing industries also spur investments and encourage the building of infrastructure, and are deeply entangled in the world economy. There are few areas of the economy that manufacturing industries don’t touch.

5. COMMODITY TRADING

Commodity trading companies are businesses that buy, sell, and move raw materials (also known as commodities) around the world. These commodities can include:

  • Energy: oil, natural gas
  • Metals: gold, copper, aluminum
  • Agricultural products: wheat, coffee, sugar, cocoa
  • Others: timber, water, etc.

They don’t just trade the physical goods—they also work with financial contracts (like futures and derivatives) to speculate, hedge risks, or lock in prices.

WHAT DO THESE COMPANIES DO?

  • Buy raw materials from producers (miners, farmers, oil companies).
  • Sell to buyers like factories, governments, retailers, refineries.
  • Manage logistics such as shipping, warehousing, trucking, etc.
  • Trade based on price changes: using data to buy low and sell high.
  • Hedge risks, for example, if prices are expected to fall, they use contracts to protect themselves.

MAIN ROLES IN DIVERSIFIED INDUSTRIES

In the Diversified Industries world, you can find a wide range of roles and functions. Indeed, depending on their structure and size, companies can open vacancies in pretty much all the fields.

  • Graduate Programs

Graduate programs are fast-track programs that can last up to 12 to 24 months, they serve as a career pathway for a specific organization or industry. They are designed for high potential candidates willing to grow inside the company to reach middle-management / leadership positions after completion. Some of them are rotational programs which allow the person to work in different departments and with different functions.

  • Sales: Business Development/Account Management

Sales department drives the company’s growth by creating and managing the relationship with customers.

    • Business Developers: they identify new markets, a new product or service offerings and new ways of reaching existing markets. Some of the main responsibilities in this job include developing a business strategy, negotiating with clients, hitting KPI and sales targets, creating sales reports, and travelling to meet with clients.
    • Account Managers: they take over from the Business Developers after the initial sales or sign-up, maintaining and developing existing client relationship, looking after commercial communications with clients and upselling or cross-selling between these clients. From beginning to post-sale, they’re involved with project management, negotiation and strategic planning. Other aspects of the job are answering client queries and finding new business opportunities among existing customers. Also, they are expected to work with internal teams, especially Customer Service and Product Development, to improve the customer experience.
  • Finance: Corporate Finance/Controlling/Auditing

If you like numbers and finance-related topics, but you are not so passionate about working in a Bank or a Financial Services Company, the Industrial world can be the right choice for you.

You would be part of the Financial Department of a company in which finance is not the core business, but even so, a fundamental part for the company to be working and growing properly.

For more information about the financial world and the different types of jobs, check the Specialized Pathway of Finance in the Professional Guide to Finance.

  • Marketing: Product Management/Communication/Digital Marketing

Within the industrial world, marketing and communications are functions you will find in the majority of companies.

These functional areas play a very important role within the company's activity and performance.

    • Marketing: very connected with sales, the marketing department focuses on the promotion of products and services for a tagert market, understanding the company's target customers and their behaviours in order to create, coordinate and implement marketing strategies (product, price, place, promotion). These strategies are generally used and reinforced by a sales team that is in constant contact with potential and current clients/customers in order to attract and retain them.
    • Communications: normally the communications department within a company has a broader focus. Although it works hand in hand with areas like marketing and business, it is in charge of handling more than promotion. Communications might be in charge of internal/corporate communications, media relations, events, public image and speaking, and crisis management, amongst others. Their main purpose is managing all communications through a strategic plan that covers many fronts.

For more information about this field, you can also check the Specialized Pathway of Marketing, Sales, and Communication in the Professional Guide to Marketing, Communications & Media.

  • Technology: Analytics/Big Data/IT

If you are planning to work in a technological function, the industrial sector could be a good option to be considered.

Big industrial companies are innovating and adapting their structure and processes to be more digital, and for that, they will need tech and digital profiles to join their organizations. Some examples of this trend: today, the plant itself becomes virtual: Solvay, a chemicals company, is in the process of designing a complete digital avatar of its plant in France, while at Safran Aircraft Engines, each physical product has its own digital avatar.

The transition to an industry 4.0 represents a new challenge, a decisive turning point for companies in the sector. It will inevitably generate new needs in purely digital skills, virtualization, and simulation.

The Technology is everywhere and these companies will need expert to support these changes. Let´s have a look on concrete roles you can have:

    • Quantitative Analyst at Total (Energy)
    • Machine Learning & Medical Imaging Intern at Bayer (Chemicals)
    • Digital R&D Intern at ABB (Electrical & Electronic Manufacturing company)

You can also check the Specialized Pathway for Technology, to get more insights about courses and tips to succeed in these roles.

You can also check the Specialized Pathway of Technology in the Professional Guide to Technology to get more insights about courses and tips to succeed in these roles.

You can find more information about these functions in the Specialized Pathway of Marketing, Sales, and Communication in the Professional Guide to Business Development and Sales.

  • Human Resources

The presence of an HR department is an essential component of any business, regardless of the organization's size.

HR responsibilities include compensation and benefits, recruitment, training, professional development and keeping up to date with any laws that may affect the company and its employees. Among their functions there is:

    • Talent Acquisition and Talent Management
    • Payroll, Compensation and Benefit
    • Organizational Development
    • Learning and Development
    • HRIS (HR Information Systems)

You can find more information about these functions in the Professional Guide for Human Resources.

  • Supply Chain/Sourcing & Procurement/Logistics and Operations

A supply chain is a focus on the core activities within an organisation required to convert raw materials or component parts to finished products or services. It is defined as the entire process of making and selling commercial goods, including every stage from the supply of materials and the manufacture of the goods through to their distribution and sale.

Supply Chain Management is the umbrella term that covers product development, sourcing, production, procurement, logistics and more when it comes to operations in the supply chain. Without it, companies run the risk of reducing its customers, and losing a competitive edge in respective industries.

Successfully managing supply chains is essential to any company hoping to compete. When managed correctly, it can also result in much lower costs, and a faster production cycle.

  • Project Management

Project Managers are responsible for the planning, execution and completion of a project, handling all the parts of it, especially scope, schedule, finance, risk, quality and resources.

Project management skills are transferable from one industry to another. The tools and techniques of project management are universal and a good project manager should be able to add value in any environment. However, for some specific industries it can be required to gain also some technical skills, in order to understand better the products and how to manage the planning of the deliveries.

    The main responsibilities are:

    • Ensure the project meets its objectives
    • Negotiate work with the team (hours and resources)
    • Manage scope, date and budget
    • Manage stakeholder communication
    • Visualize and communicate information to the team
    • Remove impediments keeping the team from completing their work
    • Create a detailed work break down to meet deadlines and goals
  • Legal

Being qualified as a lawyer is not mandatory for applying to many positions within legal departments of multinational private companies (even if completing the qualifying route in a specific country adds value to your profile for many roles and also leaves the door open in case you would like to practise law in the future).

Known as Legal Advisors or In-house Lawyers, they provide advice on specific or several legal topics, as legal departments ensure that the company is compliant with the relevant laws governing its day-to-day operations.

To learn more about legal roles and functions, check the Specialized Pathway of Law in the Professional Guide to Law.

  • In-House Consulting

Also called internal consulting, it usually refers to a department established in a large company, which provides management consulting services to the rest of the company, or to selected departments. In the picture you can see some examples of companies having this department.

To get more information about how to perform well in an interview for a consultant position, check the Specialized Pathway for Consulting in the Professional Guide to Consulting.

Additional information: the In-House Consulting Network is a strong network of in-house consulting units from leading German companies.

Select only those you genuinely possess, and try to match them with what is required by the company and the specific job position you are applying for (make sure to read the job description carefully).

Remember, you should be ready to justify any skills listed on your CV with concrete examples! These types of questions are typical in a Behavioral Interview (see below for more information on this stage of recruitment).

PRACTICAL ACTIVITY II - CV CUSTOMIZATION

This is the moment to apply the knowledge acquired in the previous sections and boost your applications!

  1. Tailor your CV using the keywords and key insights from the previous sections. Use the IE CV Template as your base. You can introduce the keywords mainly in the professional summary, although you can use the following sections as well: "Relevant Subjects", "Thesis Project", "Relevant Experience" and "Extracurricular Activities".
  2. Review the description of your experiences mentioned in your CV. Make sure you rephrase them using keywords from the specific sector of the company and the job description.
  3. Upload your CV as a one-page PDF format to the Career Portal, so that you can use it for your applications. We have direct connections with lots of good companies, so don't miss out on the opportunity to apply to what they publish in the portal.

Application & Recruitment Process

WHAT CAN YOU APPLY TO?

TYPES OF OFFERS AVAILABLE

The Industrial world is so broad that you can find different types of opportunities and working conditions.

MAIN OFFERS FOR A JUNIOR PROFILE

  • Summer Internships

Usually, companies look for students in their penultimate year, however, you can try to apply since your first year of University (but remember to check the calendar of Internship Periods with your Academic Office first). These kinds of internships usually last 10/12 weeks and the application process can take place even in the year before (between August and November of the previous year), especially for the biggest firms.

APPLICATION TIMELINE: STARTING FROM 1 YEAR BEFORE

  • Internships

Usually, these are available for penultimate year students, last-year students, or recent graduates. Many companies publish very good internship opportunities that allow you enter the company and then be hired full-time after a few months. Normally, they don't require a strong previous professional experience, although high motivation and commitment as well as good attitude and soft skills, can be the keys to secure the position.

A regular Internship normally lasts 6 months but can be also extended to 12 months.

APPLICATION TIMELINE: AT LEAST 3 MONTHS BEFORE

  • Graduate/Leadership Programs

These programs are extremely interesting opportunities that can last 1, 2 or 3 years and they are designed for high potential candidates willing to grow inside the company and reach middle-management/leadership positions in a short period of time. For this reason, the selection process usually is long and very competitive, so you need to be well-prepared for that!

Some of them are rotational programs that allow the person to work in different departments and with different functions (usually 6 months per function/department). Companies usually don't require a strong professional background, however, having some internships or co-curricular experiences related to the field can be a big plus.

Most programs start right after the graduation period (summer or September), but the application process can take place even 1 year before. For this reason, you need to start looking for these opportunities from the 3rd or 4th quarter. of the year before they start.

APPLICATION TIMELINE: STARTING FROM 1 YEAR BEFORE

Below can find the list of different companies in diversified industries, among others, which offer the graduate programs: https://iegraduateprograms-edu.com/

  • Full-time Entry Level Positions

Once graduated, you can also have the possibility to join a company directly with a full-time position, as a junior (entry level job). For that, you really need to start enriching your CV since the very beginning of your academic journey and demostrate a good knowledge of the field.

APPLICATION TIMELINE: BASED ON THE COMPANY'S NEEDS. USUALLY, AT LEAST 3 MONTHS BEFORE THE STARTING DATE.

First of all, you need to prepare your application package (CV, Cover Letter, LinkedIn Profile) in the best way as possible. Remember that you always need to tailor your CV and the Cover Letter based on the job description of the vacancy you are going to apply for.

We have different resources to help you boost your application materials. Check the Career Development Training (on Blackboard) and, of course, contact your Career Coach!

    • Upload the document to VMock for an automatic feedback (try to reach a 75% score). And remember, the CV needs to be maximum one-page long!
    • Use the IE Cover Letter Template and watch this webinar. Once it's ready, share with us the document for a final review!
    • Boost your LinkedIn profile by checking it through VMock: LinkedIn Optimization. Again, you can always contact us for a final review.
    • Attend one of our CV Workshops. Usually hosted every Tuesday, check on IE Connects the availability and register!
  • 2. Aptitude Test/Online Assessment

Companies can require you to do an aptitude test that you will need to complete online. Aptitude tests can be very different, depending on the company/sector/function. They can be psychometric, numerical, reasoning, language, etc. Make sure to practice before the test:

    • Aptitude Tests
    • Watch this useful webinar to get more insights about Online Assessments
    • You can also do you research online (the web is plenty of aptitude tests!)
  • 3. Video Interview

Some companies use video interviews for a first screening of the candidates. You will have to answer to some questions by recording yourself through the platform that the company will share with you.

    • vMock Elevator Pitch for Video Interviews: this tool helps you practice your minute-long Elevator Pitch and uses AI to give you specific feedback for improvement. Read this guide to learn how to use it and access it through vMock.
  • 4. HR Interview

The questions in this step can vary depending on how the recruitment process is structured in a company, but usually the topics covered are:

    • Overview about the company and the position: make sure you are well prepared!
    • Motivation: Why are you interested in the company? Why are you interested in that position?
    • Competency-based: to dig into your soft skills and how you applied them in past situations. Make sure you prepare concrete examples of past situations you have experienced in which you have shown and applied your main soft skills (the ones that you mention in the CV need to be very well justified!).
    • Technical questions: usually the people working in the HR Department don't have a technical background, however, they can ask some general technical questions related to the job description. Make sure you have fully understood it.
    • (If applicable) your willingness to move, your availability to start, and your salary expectations.

Check the following materials to get very well prepared for this step:

  • 5. Technical and/or Case Interview

This is one of the last steps of the recruitment processes and it's useful for the companies to test your technical knowledge and experience. It can be (one of the two or both):

    • Revamped Interview Prep Course: You have access to updated courses covering the Case Interview and the Fit Interview. CaseCoach has refreshed the content of these courses to reflect the latest insights on the firms’ assessment criteria and users’ feedback. It also added new classes about candidate-led cases as well as presence and communication. In addition, you have access to new courses covering McKinsey's Personal Experience Interview, and Consulting Recruitment.

Here is a quick demo to walk through these new features: student’s account

Also, remember that this is a very common step in Consulting. For that, please check the Specialized Pathway for Consulting in the Professional Guide to Consulting to dig more into Case Interviews.

    • A Technical interview with a Business Manager. It is very important to be very well updated on the area of the company. Tell us about this step as we can study the possibility to give you access to a Mock Interview with a technical person.

Remember to ask interesting questions when given the opportunity. This can be something that can make the difference between you and another candidate!

  • 6. Assessment Centers

They can include tests (check the resources in the section above "aptitude test / online assessment") and, more frequently, Group Dynamics: read this document and watch this webinar to know more about them!
